Inserting Images

Using images is one of the most effective ways to grab viewer interest and convey information.   Open your Page Editor in Standard Pages and give your new page a name. Next click your mouse at the location where you want to insert your image. Then click the Image icon to add images to your web page.

The Insert Image dialog box opens. There are three ways to insert an image.

  1. You can copy the source from another website if you have permission to use their logo or image. For instance, at AmericanAuthor.com, we can right click on the book stack and choose Properties to see the source for this image.

If we copy the source and paste it into the source line at the top of the dialog box, and then click ok, this image will appear on our page.  For this or any other image you use, make sure you have permission to use the picture.

For the the next two ways to insert an image, click on the folder icon near the top right corner of the Image dialog box.

  1. You can insert an image from your existing list, or you can upload a new image from your desktop.   Scroll through your list and select the image that you want. When you're ready, click OK in the lower right hand corner of the dialogue box.
  2. You can browse for an image from your computer. Once you select the image, click upload. If the image needs to be resized or reformatted for web use, please see the instructions for Resizing images. When you're ready, click OK.

Image Properties

  1. Title: Whatever you enter here will appear when a visitor rolls their mouse over the image. (This is a rollover, not a caption)
  2. Alignment: The most common choices are left, right, or center
  3. A border is sometimes needed if there's a lot of white at the edges of your image. The border distinguishes the picture from the website. Pictures with a lot of contrast often don't need a border. Border width of 1 pixel is common.
  4. We recommend against resizing your photo using Width and Height adjustments. It's much better to use photo resizing software. See our instructions on resizing images.
  5. Spacing sets the amount of pixels that text or other images will be kept away from this image. 8 pixels is common. If, for example, your picture is right justified, you may want to set Spacing Right equal to 0. This allows your picture to line up with the right hand border. If now value is entered, the default is zero. You can see a spacing and alignment preview in the white box.
  6. When you're ready, click Insert. Your picture will appear in your page editor

Moving your picture after it's inserted.
To move an existing picture, click on it once and then drag it to a new location.

Editing a picture after it's inserted.
If you'd like to further edit your picture, you can click on your image once, then open up the Image dialog box and change the Image properties (alignment, borders, etc.)

With a bit of experimentation, you’ll be able to effectively add images to draw your visitors right to the information you want to share with them. As you look at other websites, notice how they use images. When you see a good idea, perhaps you’ll be able to use it with your own website.   Good wishes as you create your website.
